The train in this view is the Empire State Express, the New York Central's flagship run between New York and Buffalo, shown crossing Washington Street in Syracuse. The negative is marked "H 111" and "extra," which may refer to the locomotive or a special run, though the record does not say. The Detroit Publishing Company made the glass plate between about 1900 and 1915, when the railroad was a central part of Syracuse's street life and industry. Street-level rail crossings like this one show how closely trains, traffic, and downtown commerce shared the same space in that era.
