A glass negative of a New York Central Railroad photographic car, rather than a street or station, makes this one stand apart from the city views around it. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its photochrom prints and view books in the years around 1900, is a possible client for the work, though the record offers only a suggestion. Cars like this served as traveling darkrooms, letting photographers develop plates on the spot and reach scenic and industrial sites along the line. The negative later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado and came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1949.
