Little Falls, in New York's Mohawk Valley, is a narrow gap where the river drops over rocky ledges, and the New York Central Railroad's tracks were laid through that tight space beside the water. The 1880s and 1890s were a period of heavy rail expansion, and the Mohawk corridor was one of the busiest routes in the state, carrying trains alongside the river, the Erie Canal, and local roads. The catalog of photographer William Henry Jackson's views, published in 1898, credits him with this negative, and the Detroit Publishing Company later issued it as a print. The image shows how the railroad had to fit itself into the valley's terrain.
