Looking west up the Mohawk River at Little Falls, this view shows the narrow valley where the river cuts through rock, with railroad tracks and a footpath running beside the water. The New York Central Railroad commissioned the picture in the summer of 1890, and the Detroit Publishing Company produced it as one of its large 18 by 22 inch glass negatives. The Mohawk corridor had carried the Erie Canal since the 1820s and later the railroad, so the scene records a route that shaped how goods and travelers moved across the state. The photograph is worth a close look for the way the tracks, towpath, and river are squeezed together in a tight gorge.
