A locomotive, Engine No. 435 of the Michigan Central Railroad, stands at the Falls view station, placing a working train beside one of the country's best-known natural attractions. The Detroit Publishing Company made this large glass negative in 1890, and the record suggests it was the left section of a panorama, with the other sections not held in this collection. Railroads often sponsored views like this to promote travel to the falls, which drew sightseers from across the country. The mix of train and scenery shows how the company marketed both the landscape and the rail lines that carried visitors to it.
