Photographed by George Barker in Niagara Falls, New York, this stereograph shows a Black woman nursing a child under the wry title "A free lunch." Barker was known for Niagara views sold to tourists, and cards like this were made for the stereoscope viewers that filled American parlors in the 1890s. Genre scenes of this kind often leaned on racial and domestic stereotypes, so the joke in the title deserves a careful reading. The card's copyright notation shows it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office to protect it against unauthorized copies.
