Matzoh, the unleavened bread eaten during Passover, is the focus of this scene: the caption describes free matzoh and matzoh flour being handed out at 137 East Broadway on the Lower East Side. In the early 1900s that neighborhood was one of the most densely settled Jewish communities in the United States, home to many immigrant families from Eastern Europe who worked for very low wages. The negative is dated April 11, 1908, which falls within the Passover season, when such charitable aid would have mattered most. The photograph comes from the Bain News Service, whose glass negatives document daily life in New York at the time.
