Taken in lower Manhattan, where Broadway meets Fulton Street a few blocks north of Wall Street, this view captures one of the busiest crossings of the old downtown commercial district. The glass negative dates from sometime between 1910 and 1920, a period when streetcars and motor vehicles were sharing the avenue with horse-drawn wagons. It belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company Collection, whose photographers traveled widely recording American cities and landscapes for sale as views. The negative's jacket carried only the generic title "Scene in a large city," so the specific location name was supplied by the cataloger. It reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
