Mulberry Street, on the western edge of what is now Little Italy, was one of the most crowded immigrant corridors in Lower Manhattan when this glass negative was made around 1900 to 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which marketed hand-colored and black-and-white views of American places to travel and souvenir buyers, often photographed busy street markets like this one, with pushcarts and wagons lining the roadway among tenement buildings. The wave of Italian immigration that filled these blocks in the decades around 1900 turned the district into a dense hub of food shops, vendors and family businesses. The negative's catalog number and its 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado show how the company's views later reached archives far from New York.
