Red Hook, the waterfront neighborhood in Brooklyn, is the setting here, on East Market Street in 1913. The Wittemann Collection, a body of street and city views assembled by the photographer Wittemann, shows the street at a time when motorcars were becoming a common sight beside horse-drawn wagons. The caption card lists automobiles and drug stores among its subjects, so the scene likely includes a storefront with a parked car, though the record itself is unverified. Red Hook was then a busy industrial port district, and its streets offer a useful glimpse of everyday commercial life in early twentieth-century Brooklyn.
