The garden in the foreground is the focus here, set before the Alfred Herter house in East Hampton on Long Island. The photograph dates to between 1917 and 1922, when East Hampton was attracting painters, writers, and well-to-do New Yorkers who built summer homes there and often laid out elaborate gardens around them. It belongs to the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection at the Library of Congress. Johnston was a leading photographer of American architecture and gardens in the early twentieth century, and her pictures record how estate landscaping was done during that period.
