Newton's Garage at Lake Ronkonkoma, on eastern Long Island, is pictured here as a roadside service business from the 1910s, when automobiles were spreading quickly into rural areas that had little mechanical support. The record's subject headings point to its towing work, as "wreckers" were the early trucks and cars fitted with winches and heavy chains to haul disabled vehicles out of ditches and off country roads. Such garages were often among the first places a motorist could get a repair, so the building reflects how quickly the car changed daily life beyond the cities. The print is part of the Wittemann Collection in the Library of Congress.
