The Tiffany Foundation Gardens at Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island's North Shore were tied to Louis Comfort Tiffany, the stained-glass maker and decorator whose estate and artistic circle centered on the area. This photograph comes from the Frances Benjamin Johnston Collection, and Johnston, a prominent documentary photographer of her era, often recorded gardens and country estates for magazines that celebrated American homes and landscape design. Its dating to roughly 1909 to 1927 places it in the years when Tiffany's grounds were being shaped as a showpiece of garden art, and the image gives a sense of how carefully such spaces were composed.
