Passengers crowd the deck of a boat unloading at Ellis Island in this stereograph, a card issued around 1928 by the Keystone View Company, which was based in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Ellis Island had served as the main federal inspection station for arrivals at the Port of New York since 1892, but by the later 1920s, after the 1924 immigration act set national quotas, the number of newcomers had dropped sharply. Cards like this were meant for a stereoscope, which fused two slightly offset photographs into one three-dimensional scene for home and classroom viewers.
