Few subjects in the Library of Congress's stereograph holdings carry as much weight as this c1911 view of medical inspection at Ellis Island. Immigrants arriving in New York were screened by Public Health Service doctors before being admitted, and the physical examination of women, often conducted in a separate space, was one of the most closely watched steps in that process. Stereographs like this one were made as paired images to be seen through a viewer, giving a three-dimensional sense of the crowded rooms. The record notes a U.S. Copyright Office registration, which suggests the card was issued for commercial sale to a wide audience.
