From the northwest tip of Governors Island, this view looks southwest across New York Harbor toward the lower end of Manhattan, as the city stood in the 1770s. The island sits at the meeting point of the Hudson and East rivers, so whoever controlled it could watch ships entering and leaving the city's waterfront. British forces occupied New York from 1776 until 1783, and the harbor and its islands were central to that long wartime presence. The photoengraving itself was made much later, probably between 1915 and 1928, so it reproduces an eighteenth-century scene for twentieth-century viewers.
