Taken from the base looking up, this view shows the full front of the statue on Bedloe's Island, the island that has since been renamed Liberty Island. France gave the statue to the United States, and it was dedicated in 1886 after Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed it. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news photographs made in New York in the early 1900s. The date of about 1908 is taken from an old caption card, so it is approximate. The low angle makes the monument look especially tall against the sky.
