Bedloe's Island, the site of the Statue of Liberty, is the subject of this reproduction of a painting by the marine artist Edward Moran. The statue, a gift from the people of France and designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was dedicated in October 1886 with ceremonies that drew large crowds to New York Harbor. Moran was known for seascapes, so his treatment of the event emphasizes the water and shipping around the new monument. The caption card records no date, and its details are unverified, so the print's exact origin is uncertain.
