Rather than a view of the finished monument, this wood engraving shows the granite pedestal being built on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor, with an inset head-and-shoulders portrait of the sculptor, Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, placed beside it. The image appeared in *Harper's Weekly* on June 6, 1885, as the American side of the project was still raising money and readying a base for the copper statue that France had gifted. Its pairing of the site with the sculptor's face shows how the magazine presented the statue as a joint Franco-American undertaking.
