Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor, the site the title names, is where the statue was set on its granite pedestal, and it was later renamed Liberty Island. France gave the statue to the United States, and Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed the copper figure, while Gustave Eiffel's firm built the iron framework inside it. American donors paid for the pedestal, many of them small contributors reached through a fundraising drive led by newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886. The print's date of about 1885 falls in the years when the monument was being completed.
