The Bartholdi Statue stands on Bedloe's Island in New York Harbor, the site that would later be renamed Liberty Island. Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the copper figure was a gift from the people of France to the United States, meant to mark the friendship between the two nations and the ideals of liberty. Its copper skin, which has since weathered to the green patina visitors know today, was shaped in France before being shipped across the Atlantic and assembled on the island. Dedicated in 1886, the statue soon became one of the most recognized symbols of America for immigrants arriving by sea.
