This wood engraving from *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* shows the French steamer *Isère* arriving in New York harbor on June 19, 1885, with Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi's statue aboard, packed in crates rather than assembled. The fleet is shown offering a salute of welcome as the ship approaches Bedloe's Island, where the statue's granite pedestal was nearing completion. The gift from France was meant to mark the friendship between the two nations and the centennial of American independence. The statue was not dedicated until October 1886, so this scene captures a moment when the project was still taking physical shape.
