The Statue of Liberty stands on Bedloe's Island, the small island in New York Harbor that was renamed Liberty Island in 1956. The statue was designed by the French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and given to the United States by France as a gift marking the friendship between the two nations and the ideals of liberty shared by both. Its copper skin, shaped over an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel's firm, was assembled in France before being shipped across the Atlantic. The statue was dedicated in October 1886 and has since become one of the most recognized symbols of America.
