Few early views show the statue so plainly on Bedloe's Island, the small patch of New York Harbor that is now Liberty Island. This colored print is dated to about August 1885, when the copper figure, a gift from France, was still waiting for its granite pedestal to be finished, so artists of the period often showed the statue in idealized form before it was fully installed. The name on the associated shelflist card, Charles Magnus, is linked to New York print publishing, a trade that fed the public appetite for landmark views. The statue was formally dedicated in October 1886.
