From high on the statue, the photographer looks down on visitors strolling beneath the raised right hand, whose shadow falls across the ground of Bedloe's Island, the name the island carried until 1956. The scene shows how the monument drew steady crowds even in 1944, when the country was at war and many public places were quieter. The statue was a gift from France, designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated in 1886. Its outstretched arm and torch became one of the most recognized landmarks for people arriving in New York Harbor.
