Two albertypes from about 1887 pair a full view of the statue on Bedloe's Island with a close study of its head, the part of the monument most visitors saw first from the water. The statue had been dedicated only months earlier, on October 28, 1886, after its copper sheets were shipped from France in crates and assembled on the island. Albertypes were a photomechanical process that let publishers turn photographs into inexpensive reproductions, and the copyright credit to Adolph Wittemann of New York City shows how quickly commercial photographers sold views of the new landmark.
