City Hall in lower Manhattan, seen from the front, anchors this view of the building that has served as the seat of New York City's government since the 1810s. Completed in 1812 in a restrained Federal style, its marble-faced facade faces the open green of City Hall Park, and the building stands as one of the oldest continuously used municipal halls in the country. Photographs from around 1915 capture it at a time when the surrounding blocks were filling with elevated railway lines, streetcars and the growing bulk of commercial towers, so the modest scale of the hall stands out against the city growing up around it. The print is a useful record of how the civic center looked just before the skyline changed dramatically in the following decades.
