Completed in 1812 in City Hall Park at the lower end of Manhattan, this building has served as the seat of city government for more than two centuries. Its Federal-style design, credited to Joseph-François Mangin and John McComb Jr., gives it a restrained, symmetrical elegance that suits a color view. The picture is a photochrom, a process that printed photographs in color from lithographic stones, and it belongs to a numbered series by the Detroit Publishing Co. made around 1900. The company assembled such albums partly as a catalog for its own office, so the view reflects how it presented the city to customers.
