Set in City Hall Park at the head of Broadway in lower Manhattan, this view shows the building completed in 1812 to designs by Joseph-François Mangin and John McComb Jr. Its restrained Federal-style facade served as the seat of city government through the rapid growth of the late nineteenth century, when the surrounding streets filled with commerce and traffic. The print carries a copyright notice in the name of Charles Pollock of Boston, a photographer, which suggests it was issued through a Boston studio. The caption card's details are unverified, so the date of about 1880 is an estimate.
