Tammany Hall's headquarters on East 14th Street, a short walk from Union Square, housed the Democratic political organization that dominated New York City politics for much of the nineteenth century. Completed in the late 1860s, the building became closely tied to the machine's patronage and its leaders, including William M. Tweed, whose exposure in 1871 badly damaged the organization's reputation. This stereograph was issued around 1896 by A.S. Campbell of Elizabeth, New Jersey, and its paired images were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. Cards like this one brought views of city streets and landmarks into parlors across the country.
