A lone street sweeper pushing a handcart gives this c1896 view of New York City its everyday character. The photograph is credited to Elizabeth Alice Austen, the Staten Island photographer known for her street scenes, though the date comes from an old caption card and has not been verified. In the mid-1890s, the city's street cleaning was undergoing a major overhaul under Colonel George E. Waring Jr., who dressed sweepers in white uniforms and organized their work more systematically. Hand-pushed carts like this one were a familiar sight on city streets of the period.
