Pell Street runs through the heart of New York's Chinatown, and this view looks along it toward the Bowery, a street that by the early 1900s was lined with tenements, shops and the crowded businesses of the neighborhood. The print was published as a halftone illustration in King's Views of New York, a popular guide-book series of the period that sold city scenes to visitors and armchair travelers alike. Chinatown drew considerable curiosity from outsiders at the time, and images like this one were often shaped by that interest. The record's data comes from an old caption card and is unverified, so the exact date and vantage point should be read with that in mind.
