Stereo card No. 8346, issued by Underwood & Underwood, uses two slightly offset views so that men working on a steel frame appear to hang above the street when seen through a stereoscope. Around 1906, New York was rising quickly on steel skeletons, a method that let builders carry floors on a riveted framework instead of thick masonry walls. Ironworkers and riveters did much of this dangerous work high in the air, and the card conveys the scale of that effort. Underwood & Underwood sold such cards in large numbers to home viewers who wanted to see the growing city.
