The Herald Building stood at Broadway and 34th Street, on the site that gave Herald Square its name, and this print shows it at a time when the New York Herald was among the city's most widely read papers. The building was designed by the firm of Stanford White for publisher James Gordon Bennett Jr., and its Beaux-Arts facade and tower made it a landmark of the new commercial district rising around Midtown. The photographer's name, J.S. Johnston, appears on the card, and the date of about 1895 comes from an unverified caption, so the exact year may differ. Look at the street life and the building's ornament for a picture of how the city's newspaper row was changing in the 1890s.
