This view of the Metropolitan Building is a c1894 photographic print credited to J.S. Johnston, who held the copyright and numbered it 280 in his series. The 1890s were a period when New York was turning to taller office blocks, many built on steel frames that allowed far more floors than masonry walls could support. Photographers of the era, Johnston among them, documented these structures as the city's streetscapes changed quickly around them. The catalog details are old and unverified, so the exact location and construction dates are best confirmed against period sources.
