The Metropolitan Life Insurance Building, shown here, was among the tallest structures in the world when this glass-plate negative was made around 1905. Designed by Napier Atterbury and completed in 1909, it was not yet standing in 1905, so the view must have been taken during construction or of an earlier building on the site. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced this image, was known for its large-format views of American cities, and its collection preserves a detailed record of how New York looked at the turn of the century. The insurer's headquarters later became a symbol of the city's skyline and corporate ambition.
