A life insurance advertisement that shows agricultural laborers is an unusual pairing, and the record notes it may have served as a receipt. The American Bank Note Company, a New York firm known for engraved banknotes, securities and stamps, produced the plate, and its fine line work was prized for documents meant to be kept and trusted. Around 1870, insurers used such ornate engravings to reassure customers that a policy offered security for families, including those who worked the land. The "No. 3" and copyright notice suggest it was one design in a numbered series.
