Few buildings on Wall Street stood out as sharply as the Bank of Manhattan Company's headquarters at 40 Wall Street, shown here in a view dated around 1930. Completed in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the tower rose into the crowded financial district as one of the era's record-setting skyscrapers, and for a brief time it was among the tallest buildings in the world. This photoprint was issued by the commercial studio of Irving Underhill, a New York firm that sold views of the city's landmarks, so it reflects the commercial interest in documenting the boom in downtown office construction.
