Looking down on Wall Street from above, this view shows the narrow canyon that gave the financial district its name, with tall office blocks packed tightly along its length. The picture was made sometime between 1910 and 1930, when steel-framed skyscrapers were transforming lower Manhattan's skyline and rising among streets laid out in the colonial era. Trinity Church, at the street's upper end near Broadway, was one of the older landmarks that stood among the new towers. A high vantage point like this one makes the crowding of the district easy to see.
