The Waldorf Astoria was one of the most celebrated hotels in the country when this bird's-eye view was taken around 1903, shortly after the grand hotel was built on Fifth Avenue at 33rd Street. The view looks down on the building from above, letting the viewer take in its mass and the dense streets of Midtown around it. The print was made by the Byron studio, a firm known for its photographs of New York buildings and street scenes in this period. Because the catalog record comes from an unverified caption card, the exact date should be treated as approximate.
