Seen from above, this view shows Trinity Church at the head of Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, its Gothic Revival steeple rising out of a dense cluster of commercial buildings. Richard Upjohn designed the brownstone church, completed in the 1840s, and by the early twentieth century its spire was dwarfed by the new office towers filling the financial district. The photographer, Irving Underhill, registered a copyright on the image, and the record dates it to about 1912, though that date comes from an older caption card and has not been verified. The contrast between the old church and the rising skyscrapers is what makes the picture worth a second look.
