Shot from high above Fifth Avenue, this view shows Grand Army of the Republic veterans continuing their march in the funeral procession for Ulysses S. Grant. Grant died at Mount McGregor, New York, in July 1885, and his funeral in New York City that August drew huge crowds to the streets along the route. Elevated views like this one let viewers take in the full length of a column that ground-level photographs could only partly capture.
