Few intersections in Manhattan changed as quickly as Fifth Avenue at 59th Street, where the broad plaza marks the southeastern edge of Central Park. When this view was made around 1905, the Plaza Hotel was rising on the corner and the square was still being shaped into the space later known as Grand Army Plaza. The photographer, Irving Underhill, copyrighted his street views, and the old caption card notes streetcar tracks, a reminder of how much of the avenue's traffic then moved on rails. The caption data has been revised over time, so the exact details are worth checking against the record.
