The Astor name on this Fifth Avenue print points to one of the family's grand town houses, part of a row of mansions that made the avenue the center of New York's wealthiest society by the 1890s. Around that time, William Waldorf Astor's properties near 33rd and 34th streets, including the hotels that later became the Waldorf-Astoria, drew a great deal of attention, and the street was lined with the homes of the city's most prominent families. The photograph is attributed to J.S. Johnston of New York, a studio that issued numbered street and building views, though the caption card's details are unverified.
