The Hotel Plaza stands at East 60th Street and Fifth Avenue, where the avenue meets the southeast corner of Central Park, and this view is labeled as looking south from that corner. The hotel opened in 1907 to a design by Henry J. Hardenbergh in the Beaux-Arts style, with a mansard roof and ornate detailing that made it a landmark of the city's luxury hotel trade. Irving Underhill, a commercial photographer who copyrighted many New York street and building views, made the picture, which records the hotel and its surroundings as the city was growing up around the park.
