The Ritz-Carlton stood at the corner of Madison Avenue and 46th Street, a few blocks from Grand Central Terminal, and that location helps explain why its caption card is tagged with both hotels and railroad stations. The hotel belonged to a period when Midtown was becoming the city's center for luxury travel and society. The photograph was taken by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who made many city views for sale to visitors. The record's date of about 1911 comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified.
