This photograph shows the northwest corner of Madison Avenue and 59th Street in New York City, one of the city's most prominent crossings near the southern edge of Central Park. The record dates it to around January 20, 1927, but notes that the date comes from an unverified caption card. The image is a photoprint registered for copyright by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who recorded city streets in the 1920s. In those years, Midtown was growing rapidly, and the stretch of Madison Avenue near 59th Street was becoming a center for fashionable shops and hotels, which makes the corner a useful snapshot of that change.
