Few midtown corners were changing as quickly as Fifth Avenue at 49th Street in the early 1930s, and this photograph records the southwest corner of the Fifth Avenue Building at 608 Fifth Avenue. The date of November 20, around 1931, comes from the caption card and has not been independently verified. The print was made by Irving Underhill, a New York photographer who registered his street views with the U.S. Copyright Office as photoprints. Its location a short distance from the blocks being cleared for Rockefeller Center makes it a useful record of the streetscape just before that complex took shape.
