Few private houses on Fifth Avenue drew as much notice as the marble residence that A.T. Stewart, the dry goods merchant, built at the corner of 34th Street. Designed by the architect John Kellum and dated to about 1869, it stood among the grand mansions that rose along the avenue as wealthy families moved uptown from lower Manhattan. This photoprint, copyrighted by J.S. Johnston and dated about 1899, records the house decades after it was built, when the neighborhood had changed considerably. The date and attribution come from an unverified caption card, so they are best read as approximate.
