Few buildings on Fifth Avenue announced the district's commercial future as plainly as the Heckscher Building at 730 Fifth Avenue. Completed in the early 1920s for the financier August Heckscher, it was among the first large office towers to rise along the avenue, a sign that the street was shifting from residences toward corporate use. Irving Underhill, a New York City photographer, made this print, which is dated c1941 on an unverified caption card, so that date is approximate.
